'Beat Box' Tells History of Drum Machines Through Photos

It's hard to argue that a drum machine isn't an instrument these days. Prevalent in pop and rock music since the 70s, drum machines have provided proper booty-shaking beats and spanning genres, from Sly and the Family Stone to the Beastie Boys to New Order.

Hip-hop producer Joe Mansfield's "Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession" is a coffee-table photo book of his extensive collection. Photographed by Gary Land, the book features 200 pages of machines created throughout several decades, while also providing background facts and archival advertisements for each machine.

"Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession" is set for release on Dec. 3, but you can pre-order now through Stones Throw.
